How to Make Exercise and Unbreakable Habit
Making exercise a permanent part of your life is like building a sturdy foundation for a house—it takes intention, effort, and a little patience. Here are some simple strategies to turn fitness into an unshakable habit:
1. Start Small, Build Big
Begin with just 10 minutes a day. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a short stretch, or a few bodyweight exercises, starting small helps you avoid burnout and excuses. Over time, you can build on your progress.
Try starting your day with this gentle rebounding exercise – great for the lymphatic system
2. Attach It to a Routine
Pair your workout with an existing habit, like brushing your teeth or your morning coffee. For example, “I’ll do 15 squats while waiting for the coffee to brew.” Anchoring exercise to something you already do makes it easier to remember.
You can take a note from my client’s notebook and do 25 pushups after every episode of a Netflix show.
3. Make It Enjoyable
Find an activity you genuinely enjoy. Love dancing? Put on your favorite playlist and move. Prefer the outdoors? Try hiking or cycling. If it feels like a chore, it won’t stick.
For me, I fancy pickleball – for you it may be different.
4. Schedule It
Treat exercise like an important meeting. Put it on your calendar and commit to showing up for yourself. Morning workouts work best for some, while others thrive in the evening—find your sweet spot.
Use any scheduling method that works for you even if it’s a physical or Google Calendar.
5. Reward Yourself
Celebrate your consistency with small rewards. Finished a week of workouts? Treat yourself to something non-food-related, like a new workout shirt or an episode of your favorite show guilt-free.
Note: I’ve found in my years of coaching clients that rewards work for some but are a terrible motivator for others. Unless you know that they don’t work for you, try running an experiment to see if it does motivate you.
6. Get Accountable
Join a class, get a workout buddy, or hire a coach. Knowing someone else is counting on you makes it harder to skip. Plus, you’ll enjoy the support and camaraderie.

7. Be Flexible, Not Perfect
Life happens. If you miss a workout, don’t beat yourself up—just get back on track. Consistency over time matters more than perfection.
8. Track Progress
Keep a journal or use an app to log your workouts. Watching your progress grow is incredibly motivating and will remind you why you started.
Exercise isn’t just about fitness; it’s a gift to your body, mind, and spirit. Start today with these steps, and soon, working out will feel as natural as brushing your teeth.
Practice
If you focus on improving just a little each day you will be a new person by the end of the year and you will finally break the patterns of starting and stopping your fitness routine.
