Every year, the American College of Sports Medicine surveys about 2,000 clinicians, researchers, and exercise professionals to find out what’s actually happening on gym floors and in clinics, not what’s trending on social media. 2026 marks the 20th year they’ve run this survey, which means we also get a rare look at how the entire industry has shifted over two decades. Here’s what stood out.

✦ About the Data

The American College of Sports Medicine Fitness Trends Survey polls roughly 2,000 fitness clinicians, researchers, and exercise professionals annually. Unlike social media trend reports, it reflects what’s actually being programmed and practiced in gyms, studios, and clinics, making it one of the most reliable signals in the industry.

The 5 Trends Worth Your Attention

1
The Seasonal Shift No Survey Tracks: September Gym Crowds
Right Now

Kids are back in school, summer trips are done, and everyone’s routine is snapping back into a set schedule. September is one of the busiest stretches gyms see all year, right behind the January rush, because free time finally has a fixed shape again, and people rush to fill it. If you’ve noticed the gym feels busier this week than it did in August, that’s why. The upside: new schedules mean new habits are easiest to lock in during the first few weeks, before the routine hardens into whatever shape you let it take.

2
Functional Fitness Training Keeps Climbing
Top 10 Globally

This is training built around real movement (squatting, hinging, carrying, reaching) instead of isolating a muscle for looks. It landed in the top 10 across most regions surveyed worldwide, and for good reason: it’s the kind of strength that actually shows up in your daily life, not just on a machine at the gym.

3
Active Aging Is a Bigger Deal Than Ever
Top 10 Since Year 1

There are 73 million Baby Boomers in the U.S., and every single one of them will be over 65 by 2030. Adults 65 and older now visit gyms and studios more often than any other age group. Programming focused on balance, muscle mass, strength, and mobility as we age has ranked in the industry’s top 10 nearly every year the survey has existed. This isn’t a niche category anymore. It’s a major part of where the whole industry is headed.

4
Weight Management Just Hit Its Highest Ranking Ever
All-Time High

With all the noise around medications and quick fixes, this one surprised me. Exercise for weight management reached its highest-ever ranking in this year’s survey. The framing has shifted too. Less “burn it off fast,” more building programs people can actually sustain. Because exercise is still essential for preserving muscle and long-term metabolic health, medication or not.

5
Daylight Is About to Shrink, So Use It While You’ve Got It
Sept 22

The fall equinox lands September 22nd, and after that, daylight starts disappearing fast. If you’ve been doing your walks, runs, or outdoor sessions in the evening light, this is your last real stretch of it before those workouts start happening in the dark. Worth grabbing now while it’s still there. An early morning or after-work outdoor session hits different once the sun’s setting at 5:30.

✦ This Month’s Fuel
“Trends come and go. Consistency is the only one that ever actually works.”

A Question Worth Sitting With

✦ Reflect on This

Of everything above, which one is actually missing from your routine right now: the functional strength, the mobility work, or just the consistency to stick with any of it long enough to see it pay off?

Turning the Data Into Something You’ll Actually Do

  • 🏋

    Train movements, not just muscles

Squat, hinge, carry, push, pull. Build your week around those patterns and the “functional strength” trend takes care of itself. You don’t need a trendy program to benefit from this. You just need to move the way your body was designed to move.

  • ☀️

    Get outside this week

Daylight’s shrinking fast after the 22nd, so grab a couple of outdoor sessions now before evening workouts move indoors for the season. The light, the fresh air, and the change of scenery are worth more than most people realize for energy and consistency.

  • 📈

    Build for sustainable, not fast

If weight management is part of your goal, aim for changes you can still be doing in a year, and that’s what the data shows actually sticks. The highest-ever ranking for this category isn’t a coincidence: people are finally looking for programs that outlast the motivation spike.

  • 🔒

Lock it in now, while it’s easy

The first few weeks of a new routine are when habits are most flexible. Whatever you want September to look like, start it this week, not after the schedule fully hardens. September’s energy is one of the best natural windows for building something new. Use it.

None of this is complicated. It’s just consistent. That’s the part the data keeps confirming, year after year.
