Stop Managing Your Body,
Start Building It
Ray Martinez · Awareness Training Blog
One of the most common things I hear from people who come to me is this: “I feel limited by my body.” And when I ask them to tell me more, the answers are always revealing. They’d travel more. Play with their grandkids without paying for it the next day. Get back to hiking. Stop turning down invitations because they’re not sure their body can keep up. Sleep without pain. Move through the day without that constant awareness of what hurts.
The body holding you back isn’t an inevitable part of getting older. In most cases, it’s the result of specific, addressable things, and when those things get addressed, life opens back up in ways that feel almost surprising. This week I want to talk about what it actually takes to build a body that supports your life instead of limiting it. And what to do about it starting right now.
“A body that doesn’t hold you back isn’t a luxury. It’s what allows you to fully show up for every other part of your life.”
What “Holding You Back” Usually Looks Like
It rarely looks dramatic. It’s usually quiet and cumulative. Small limitations that grow slowly until they become the new normal. Things like:
- Waking up stiff every morning and waiting for your body to “warm up”
- Avoiding certain activities because of pain, tightness, or fear of injury
- Feeling exhausted by physical demands that used to be easy
- Sitting out instead of joining in at family events, on trips, with friends
- Finishing a workout only to feel beat up for two days after
- Losing confidence in what your body can do
- Carrying pain so consistently that you’ve stopped noticing it’s there
None of these are inevitable. Every single one is addressable with the right approach. But they don’t fix themselves, and they rarely improve without intentional action.
The Five Foundations of a Body That Doesn’t Hold You Back
Most pain and limitation comes not from a single weak muscle but from the stabilizers (the deep core, the glutes, the rotator cuff, the hip abductors) that keep joints centered and protected during movement. A program that specifically targets these muscles doesn’t just reduce pain. It changes how the whole body moves. Start with 2 focused sessions per week and build from there.
Stiffness and restricted range of motion don’t wait until you’re injured to cause problems. They quietly change how you move, how you load your joints, and how you recover from physical activity long before anything dramatic happens. Daily mobility work (10 to 15 minutes of targeted stretching, ELDOA, and joint mobility) keeps the system working the way it was designed to. This is non-negotiable for a body that doesn’t hold you back.
A body that doesn’t hold you back can sustain effort. It can climb the stairs without gasping, keep up on a hike, and get through a busy day without collapsing by evening. Cardiovascular fitness isn’t just about heart health. It’s about functional capacity and energy. Three 30-minute sessions of moderate cardio per week is enough to make a significant, noticeable difference in daily life.
A body that constantly feels beaten up after exercise isn’t recovering well, and that’s a programming problem, not a personal failure. Adequate sleep, smart workout spacing, active recovery sessions, proper hydration, and nutrition that supports repair are not optional extras. They’re the difference between a body that gets stronger and one that just stays sore.
Generic programs produce generic results. A body that doesn’t hold you back is built through a plan that accounts for your specific history, your limitations, your goals, and the way your body actually moves. That’s what assessment-based coaching provides, and it’s the single biggest difference between people who struggle for years and people who finally start making real progress.
Most people wait until something goes wrong before they invest in their body. But the clients who get the most dramatic results are the ones who start before the crisis, while the body still has plenty of capacity to respond. There is no better time than right now to start building a body that doesn’t hold you back.

This Week’s Question to Sit With
What is one thing you’ve stopped doing, or started avoiding, because of how your body feels?
Most people have at least one. A hobby they’ve set aside. A trip they haven’t booked. A physical activity they used to love that now feels out of reach. Often we adapt so gradually to our limitations that we stop seeing them as limitations at all. They just become “how things are now.”
But how things are now is not the same as how things have to be. This week, name the thing. Because the moment you name it, you give yourself something worth training for.
3 Things to Do This Week
-
✍️
Write down one thing your body is currently holding you back from
Be specific. Not “I want to feel better,” but “I want to hike with my family in October without my knee stopping me.” Specificity turns a vague wish into a training goal. And a training goal gives your program direction and meaning.

🤹
Add 10 minutes of mobility work to your morning this week
Before coffee, before your phone, before anything else. Hip circles, a hip flexor stretch, a thoracic rotation, and your ELDOA. Ten minutes done consistently every morning will change how your body feels within two weeks. Not someday. Two weeks.
